JAC is in the thick of a
fresh new vision for Allan Gardens

Headed by The Friends of Allan Gardens and the City of Toronto, the proposal seeks to breathe new life into Allan Gardens re-connecting the community with arts & culture, education, heritage, social influence, and horticultural excellence.

As downtown Toronto continues to densify; Jarvis & Carlton’s 160-year-old, 5-hectare park, Allan Gardens is flourishing with a bold new revitalization plan.

Experience an enhanced quality of life in the city

The vision is to establish the park as a destination attracting visitors of all ages and backgrounds – from the neighbourhood, across the city, and beyond. The proposed initiatives are:

Expand Art & Culture

Support existing and future cultural gatherings and events in the park, as well as establish programs and venues for a variety of performing arts. Design a seasonal exhibit of public art ambient displays of night lighting.

Improve Pedestrian Connection

Animate and improve pedestrian connectivity to the park, neighbourhood churches and Jarvis Street cultural corridor.

Restoration & Expansion of Existing Facilities

Create a new greenhouse link building connecting all six greenhouses. Enhance outdoor gathering spaces and create a café in the park.

Enhance Horticultural Excellence

Expand the horticultural collection with the inclusion of a Children’s Garden and Indigenous Arboretum. Develop new programs, demonstration gardens and host urban gardening event.

Design Vibrant Park Entrance & Streetscapes

Create defined park entrances with lush vegetation and re-imaged streetscapes to define a transitional zone.

Improve Park Functionality

Define a holistic accessibility plan for the park and conservatory. Adopt sustainable management practices and systems.

Revival of Heritage Features

Restore existing Palm House and Conservatories, as well as reinterpret the Lost Paths and garden experiences on the east side. Create a new central water feature.

Support Park Stewardship

Explore new models for park governance including volunteer programs, extended park hours and partnership with Indigenous groups to manifest truth and reconciliation.
